Company History

Rinaldo Piaggio founded his company in January 1884 in Pontedera, Italy. At first, Piaggio produced locomotives and railway carriages for the burgeoning railroad industry in Italy, but by World War II, their catalog had expanded significantly. Piaggio produced buses, trams, trains, and planes. Unfortunately, their factory was an architectural casualty of war, so production moved to Biella.

After the war, Enrico Piaggio, Rinaldo’s son, chose to further develop the company catalog to include motorcycles and scooters, as these would provide Italians with an affordable and compact way to get around.
 

Vespa® Scooters

Of course, Piaggio’s most famous scooter is the Vespa®, a compact and stylish scooter named after the Italian word for “wasp.” In the decade after its release, over a million Vespa® scooters were produced.
